A Cluster-Focus of Multiple Sclerosis at Henribourg, Saskatchewan

This study presents the clinical characteristics of 8 victims of multiple sclerosis from the hamlet of Henribourg, Saskatchewan with a population of less than 75 people. A diligent victim of the disease had observed that six female classmates from the early 1940's had later developed multiple sclerosis. Two male military personnel who had also resided briefly in close proximity, during the same common exposure time, also later developed multiple sclerosis. The mean onset time of developing the disease after leaving the area was 20 years. This cluster-focus suggests a common exposure to an environmental factor or a common infective agent in the etiology of multiple sclerosis.

A rapid method is described for preparing and staining salivary glands of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks infected with Theileria parva. The technique, involving the use of a modified methyl green pyronin stain, minimizes the risk of losing material and allows examination of stained glands within minutes of preparation. The technique was applied in a series of studies in which ticks were either infected with T. parva under different conditions, or maturation of parasites in adult ticks was stimulated by different means. When nymphal ticks were fed on the ears of cattle the subsequent infection rate of the adult ticks showed no correlation with the parasitaemia of the cattle at the time of nymphal engorgement. There was no difference in infection rates between adult ticks in which parasite maturation had been stimulated either by incubation at 37 °C or by feeding on rabbits. However, parasite maturation took about 1 day longer in incubated ticks than in rabbit-fed ticks. Female ticks were consistently more highly infected than males, both in terms of the percentage of ticks infected and the mean number of infected acini/tick. Ticks were infected with T. parva by injection of nymphs with parasitaemic bovine blood, but the resultant adult infection was lower than that in ticks which had been infected naturally by feeding on cattle.

The growth of thick silicon carbide (SiC) epitaxial layers for large-area, high-power devices is described. Horizontal hot-wall epitaxial reactors with a capacity of three, 3-inch wafers have been employed to grow over 350 epitaxial layers greater than 100 μm thick. Using this style reactor, very good doping and thickness uniformity and run-to-run reproducibility have been demonstrated. Through a combination of reactor design and process optimization we have been able to achieve the routine production of thick epitaxial layers with morphological defect densities of around 1 cm−2. The low defect density epitaxial layers in synergy with improved substrates and SiC device processing have resulted in the production of 10 A, 10 kV junction barrier Schottky (JBS) diodes with good yield (61.3%).

Regulation of ungulate populations by parasites relies on establishing a density-dependent relationship between infection and vital demographic rates which may act through the effect of parasites on body condition. We examine evidence for parasite impacts in 285 red deer (Cervus elaphus) harvested during 1991 and 1992 on the Isle of Rum. In the abomasa, prevalence of nematodes was 100% and the most abundant genus observed were Ostertagia species, however, mean intensity of infection was low (less than 1000) relative to other studies. Additional species, also present in low numbers, included Nematodirus spp., Capillaria spp., Cooperia spp., Monieza expanza, Oesophagostomum venulosum and Trichuris ovis. Lungworm (Dictyocaulus spp.) and tissue worm (Elaphostronygylus cervi) larvae were also observed in faecal samples. There was no evidence for acquired immunity to abomasal nematodes. Despite low levels of infection, both adult male and female deer showed significant negative correlation between indices of condition (kidney fat index, dressed carcass weight and larder weight) and intensity of Ostertagia spp. infection. However, there was no evidence that pregnancy rate in females was related to intensity of infection. For calves, there was no relationship between body condition and intensity of infection. The apparent subclinical effects of low-level parasite infection on red deer performance could alternatively be due to animals in poorer nutritional state being more susceptible to infection. Either way the results suggest that further studies of wild populations are justified, in particular where high local host densities exist or alternative ungulate hosts are present, and, where experimental treatments are tractable.

This case illustrates the surgical use of wire localization, a well tried technique from a different field of surgery, in the removal of an ultrasound-detected, impalpable deep lower cervical lymph node in a high-risk patient. A localization needle with an echogenic tip was placed freehand under ultrasound guidance, immediately before surgery. The imaging and marking of the impalpable cervical lymph node resulted in a precise surgical dissection and a reduction in operating time whilst minimizing risks to the patient and staff.

Epitaxial 4H-SiC layers suitable for high power devices have been grown in a hot-wall chemical-vapor deposition (CVD) system. These layers were subsequently characterized for many parameters important in device development and production. The uniformity of both thickness and doping will be presented.
Doping trends vs. temperature and growth rate will be shown for the p-type dopant used. The n-type dopant drops in concentration with increasing temperature or increasing growth rate. In contrast, the p-type dopant increases in concentration with decreasing temperature or increasing growth rate. A simple descriptive model for this behavior will be presented.
The outcome from capacitance-voltage and SIMS measurements demonstrate that transitions from n to n−, or p to p−, and even n to p levels can be made quickly without adjustment to growth conditions. The ability to produce sharp transitions without process changes avoids degrading the resulting surface morphology or repeatability of the process. Avoiding process changes is particularly important in growth of thick layers since surface roughness tends to increase with layer thickness.
Device results from diodes producing two different blocking voltages in excess of 5 kV will also be shown. The higher voltage diodes exhibited a breakdown behavior which was near the theoretical limit for the epitaxial layer thickness and doping level grown.

Thick, high quality 4H-SiC material suitable for high power devices has been grown in a hot-wall reactor. Recent improvements to the growth process have improved our thickness uniformity over a 50mm wafer to less than 1% and the doping uniformity to less than 5%, both values expressed as σ/mean.
A record breaking reverse blocking voltage of 5.5 kV was obtained on P-i-N diodes fabricated from a 85μm thick film. The on-state voltage drop was 5.4 V at 100 A/cm2. From this on-state voltage drop, the carrier lifetime was estimated in excess of 1μs.

Tumours of the sublingual salivary gland are exceptionally rare. The present case report describes an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the sublingual salivary gland occurring in a 16-year-old girl, in itself an uncommon event. In addition, an interesting feature of the presentation was obstruction of the ipsilateral submandibular gland due to involvement of Wharton's duct.

A measure of the electron mobility anisotropy in n-type 4H and 6H-SiC has been obtained using the Hall effect over the temperature range 80K<T<600K. Hall mobility and resistivity data are collected from appropriately oriented bar patterns fabricated into high quality epitaxial material grown on (1100) or (1120)surfaces having total impurity concentrations 1017-1018 cm-3. The observed mobility ratio for 4H is μ[1120]/[0001] and is independent of temperature. For 6H, the ratio μ[1100]/[0001] decreases from ∼6.2 at 80K to ∼5.0 at 150K and is essentially constant (∼4.8) above 200K. A donor level near 0.6 eV is occasionally observed in 4H which reduces the high temperature electron mobility and introduces an apparent temperature dependence to the mobility ratio if nonuniformly distributed.

Single photon emission computerised tomography (SPECT) was used to measure regional brain uptake of technetium-99m hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxine (Tc99m-HMPAO) in elderly patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), multi-infarct dementia (MID) and normals (n = 20 in each group). Different patterns of uptake were found between groups when cortical uptake was normalised to cerebellar uptake. Reductions occurred in all regions in AD, being most marked in temporal and posterior parietal areas. Significant correlations were found in AD between memory impairment and decreased temporal uptake bilaterally, and between duration of illness and reduced uptake in most brain regions. MID patients showed higher uptake in the anterior parietal region than did the other groups. A variable comparing anterior to posterior uptake significantly discriminated the two patient groups.

Mechanisms for the low temperature photo-dissociation of alkyl precursors for the epitaxial growth of CdxHg1-xTe (CMT) are discussed. The roles of vapour and surface nucleation are considered in the light of the free radical model which also can provide methods for controlling the vapour phase photochemistry. Higher quality CMT has been grown at 250 °C by using dimethyl mercury as a source of free methyl radicals. Problems encountered in reducing growth temperature for multilayer epitaxy are considered for CdTe and HgTe and conditions established for epitaxial growth at 200°C.The roles of alkyl concentration, substrate temperature, UV intensity and free radical concentration are explored. Results on the first reported growth of CdTe deposition using a cw UV laser source are compared with the arc lamp grown layers.
